China’s former military Leader,
Zhang Yang, 66, was found dead in his home Thursday, November 23rd
2017. He was believed to have hung himself after disappearing from public eye
for more than two months. Chinese news agency XinHua reported that Zhang violated party discipline and broke
the law by allegedly giving and accepting bribes as well as possessing a huge
amount of money, the sources of which he could not account for.
General Zhang had
been one of 11 men on the Central Military Commission that commands the
nation’s armed forces. He served as a general in the People’s Liberation army
and was considered as a key ally of President Xi Jinping, rising since Jinping
runs the office in 2012. More than 1.4 million people have been punished under
Xi's anti-corruption campaign since 2012, according to state media, including around 300 senior
official.
“In committing suicide to
avoid punishment from the party and the country’s laws, Zhang Yang’s action was
abominable,” said a commentary released by the People’s Liberation Army Daily,
the military’s official newspaper.

Yet it
seems like General Zhang prefers giving himself a favor by committing suicide
rather than being held in prison for his wrongdoing. Escaping justice seems to
be a viable escape, because it is when a suspect is dead they will preserve
their titles, honors and wealth – a coward’s way out. [GE]
