Indonesia finally opens the long-awaited first Art Museum called Museum MACAN, which stands for Museum of Contemporary and Arts in Nusantara and a word in the Indonesian language meaning Tiger. Named to be one of the boutique museums that have been opened across Asia, Museum MACAN was founded by Haryanto Adikoesomo, Indonesian philanthropist and art collector has collected over 800 paintings and sculptures by artists from across America, Europe, and Asia Art in the past 25 years.
Through the arts Haryanto has collected comes the gallery’s inaugural exhibition called “Art Turns, World Turns” featuring 90 out of 800 pieces of art created by Indonesian and International artists that Adikoesomo has collected were displayed, part of which shows the history of Indonesia such as the times during the Dutch Colony. Haryanto Adikoesomo collections hold spans from the 19th Century to the 21st Century; he began collecting art pieces just like his father did by starting with Indonesian art work.
Director of Museum MACAN, Aaron Seeto states that “Hopefully the museum will help boost the appreciation of art within Indonesia as it offers something very different to what already exists in Indonesia, meaning conservation and education spaces through art for adults and children. We are one of a kind in a sense of our national and international focus.” According to The National, Museum MACAN is one of a number boutique museum that has been opened across Asia and offers a sort of imprimatur to Jakarta.Christie Harris - 00000015786
